Ultimately if you play guitar long enough and seriously enough you’ll probably play around with almost every possible style and hopefully develop a syncretic personal style. I almost put a Mississippi John Hurt song on there because alternating bass is pretty useful to know, so that (or Merle Travis, similar ideas) could also be a useful thing to pick up. Of course if you were interested you could throw in some Django tunes or Delta blues, whatever more niche style appealed to you. If you could play all those (I can’t, about half) you’d have a pretty solid idea of what the main popular musical guitar styles were about. Whatever it is, learn it to the point where you can play along to the track without missing a beat. It’s good to know how to use effects well, actually. ![]() ![]() Many people would say Statesboro Blues, but for me Trouble No More is the best open E/D slide performance on record. Pete Anderson’s playing on this song is a country style tour de force. You want to be able to play at least a little jazz, right? Even if it’s pretty bluesy. Gotta have a good old fashioned shred song in there. If you can get this down, you’ll know how to mute strings and play funky 16th note patterns. Based on wanting to work on a variety of styles and skills, I’d go with:
